Representing

Mory Kanté

Introduction

"The talented griot from Guinea in West Africa, Mory Kante was, along with
Salif Keita an early member of the seminal Rail Band of Bamako, joining as a
singer when he was in his teens. After a stint as lead vocalist he left the
band to form his own theatrical troupe, which included dozens of performers.
In the '80s he became an international pop star, exploring neo-traditional
Manding music on the kora, as well as club-ready dance mixes. His "Yeke Yeke"
topped the European charts in 1987, making him the first African artist to
sell a million singles. Mory Kanté has since released many acclaimed albums
and has toured extensively with his live shows being always positively
received."
